Good questions to ask in a wine shop…

As the owner of a wine shop, I meet a lot of people who feel uncomfortable asking questions about what to buy, and often just grab the first bottle that looks interesting, pay, and head out of the door.  While I am very proud of all of our wines, not everyone has the same taste, which can lead to people purchasing something that may not really be the best fit for them.

To all of you that know what I am talking about, do not fear ! Any self respecting wine shop is ready and willing to give you all the advice you need. There are no silly questions, there is no need to be embarrassed, you want what you want, so don’t be afraid to ask for it.

Here are some handy questions you can ask…

Im going to be eating xxx what would you recommend as a good wine to go with it ? What about for the starter and dessert ?

Im having a party and not really sure what wines would be a good option to start with. Also, which would be better for later on when the party is in full swing, and which would be a good ‘nightcap’ to round off the evening ?

I would like to buy a bottle of wine for someone as a gift, they are fond of heavy/soft/herby/smooth wines, what do you recommend ?

When I was on holiday in xxx, I had this fantastic wine that tasted of xxx, do you have anything that may be similar ?

Even easier still, if you find a wine shop that has bottles open to taste, just try a few and see what you like.  Even if none of them are exactly what you are looking for, it provides a base to work from, which can really help identify the best wine for the occasion !
